9 - Video Poker Glossary

Low pair - Any pair that does not pay. In jacks-or- letter, low pairs are 2 through 10.

Megapoker - A statewide (Nevada) video poker ame with a progressive jackpot that pays for a sequential royal flush.

Odds - The ratio of the number of ways to win versus the number of ways to lose.

Open-ended straight - Four cards in sequential rank which can become a straight if a card is added to either end. The straight can be completed with a card of either of two ranks, or a total of eight possible cards.

Outside straight - Same as an open-ended straight.

Pair - Two cards of the same rank.

Pat hand - A winning hand, as dealt, that does not require a draw.

Payback - The total long-term winnings as a percent of the total amount bet.

Payoff - The amount paid for a winning hand.

PAYOUT - The amount paid for winning hand.

POKERMANIA - A citywide (Atlantic City) video poker game with a progressive jackpot that pays for a sequential royal flush in a specified suit.

Progressive jackpot - A group of machines are electrically connected to a common jackpot pool. As the machines are played, a small percentage of the money paid in by the players is diverted to the jackpot pool, which continues to grow until someone wins it. The jackpot is then reset to its minimum value and the growth cycle repeats itself.
