Article 5 - Your Initial Five Card Hand
You start out with a five-card hand. You may keep one, some, all, or none of these cards. It's your decision. There are five hold buttons, one underneath each card. To keep a card, press the button marked "HOLD" underneath the corresponding card you wish to keep. Thus, for each card you want to keep, you must press the hold button.

"HELD" will appear on the screen underneath each card or cards so chosen. The other cards, the ones you wish to discard, will not be kept by the machine.

What happens if you press the wrong hold button by accident or change your mind? No problem. Press the corresponding button again. If the card indicated "HELD," the "HELD" will disappear and the card will not be held by the computer. If you change your mind, press the button one more time and again "HELD" will appear on the screen indicating that the card will be kept on the draw.

Until you press the draw button, it is not too late to change your strategy decision.

You may keep all five original cards by pushing the hold button under each card, or discard all five original cards by pressing the DRAW/DEAL button without having pressed any of the hold buttons.

To discard the cards you don't want to keep and receive your new ones, you now press the DRAW/DEAL button again. Cards that had "HELD" underneath will remain, while those cards not chosen to be held will be replaced by new ones. This set of cards is your final hand.

If your hand is a winner, the machine will flash "WINNER" at the bottom of the screen. Winning hands are automatically paid according to the payoffs shown on the machine and will be added to your total number of credits.

When you are finished playing and want to leave the machine, you'll want to take your money with you of course. You can retrieve your credits at any time by pressing the CASH OUT button. Your winnings will be sent tumbling into the well below in a noisy racket as metal meets metal.

Typically, the minimum winning hand in video poker is jacks or better, though that varies by machine type. For example, deuces wild machines require at least a three of a kind for a pay-out and Pick Five machines pay-out for hands as low as a pair of sixes.

The chart below describes the winning hands for the Jacks or Better based variations. Hands are listed from weakest to strongest.

The more valuable Royal Flush is the Natural Royal Flush which doesn't use any wild cards to form it. The Natural is harder to get and will pay more. The other type of Royal Flush is the Wild Royal Flush, which uses at least one wild card to form the five card Royal Flush.

There are also pay-outs for other types of hands, such as the Bonus Quad machines where specified four a kind hands will receive a higher pay-out amount than other types of four of a kinds hands, but these will be clearly listed on the machines themselves.
