Article 1 - Introduction
Since video poker was originally introduced to the casinos, it has caught on like wildfire. Players love the fact that not only can they play the game at their leisure and without hassle, just themselves and the video poker machine, but that decision-making and skills are involved.

Video poker is loosely based on draw poker. You get five cards to start and can keep or exchange any or all of these cards to form a new five-card hand. Your goal is to get a five-card poker hand in the combinations listed on the front of the machine. The higher ranked the poker hand, the greater the pay out.

The game is simple to play, but you must make the right decisions on which cards to hold to maximize your winning chances. That is the skill element in video poker. The fun element comes in when your good play turns into winnings.

You have a wide variety of variations to choose among, from the standard Jacks or Better machines found in most places, and the popular Deuces Wild games, to a widening choice of spin-offs and variations off the original Jacks or Better theme.

Article 2 - Getting Started
The typical video poker game uses a 52 card deck which is dealt fresh after each hand. There are other variations that use multiple decks and extra cards such as wild cards, but the principles are the same.

To start, you need to insert anywhere from one to five coins into the machine or use credits that are already established in the machine. Playing machines by coin is fast becoming a thing of the past. In fact, many new machines made by manufacturers will not even accept coins anymore!

Almost all modern machines have bill acceptors, devices that accept $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills. Once the bills are accepted into the machine, the equivalent amount of credits will be posted on the machine for your bankroll. For example, if you insert a $20 bill into the bill acceptor on a quarter machine, 80 credits will be posted.

Wins and losses will be added or deducted from your credits. If you start out with 80 credits and bet five coins, then five credits will be deducted from your total credits and the machine will show "75" credits. A win of 45 credits will boost your total to 120 credits and "120" will appear in the credits area.
